U1C Event Review

On Wednesday 24^th March after a two-hour train journey I arrived at the National Portrait Gallery, to see primarily the work of portrait photographer Irving Penn.

This exhibition housed in the National Portrait Gallery, London was on between March and May 2010 and entry was £10. The exhibition which features over 120, silver and platinum print from his carer in photography, from the last seven decades.

The exhibition was fantastic seeing his work, which spans out over a lifetime. The work was hanged in order, which it was taken so when I walked around the images, it was like taking a step back in history. You could clearly see the change in years, locations, the subjects and their tools and how his style has changed over the years. The cleaver think was when there was a series of images hanged together the end two images who looking out the next two was looking in and the centre image was looking at you the viewer and there was a number of points in the room which was like this. Is this something that he was thinking about when taking the images?

As one of few young people there at the time. I think anyone remotely interested in photography should visit the exhibition as there will be something you could get from it, for example a student studying black and white photography, a photographer or a framer of images. What was good about this is some of the work you can see anywhere else!

After a short walk and seeing the sites of London I visited the Photographers Gallery, London. I went see to see the winners and other entries to the Deuthche Borse Photography prize 2010. Photographers included: Anna Fox, Zoe Leonard, Sophie Ristelhueber and Donovan Wylie.

Once again this set of images was fantastic and inspiring to look at. This exhibition featured a wide range of different types of photography and what made it interesting for me to look at. What I also liked was available near to the image was the photographers background information and story behind the images. However, I did find in disappointing that the one of the images was not there and there was so much space in the room , there was a lot of space between the images and different photographers but may be to help the viewer think about what there have just seen before moving on.

As this was a free event I would recommend this event to others to visit to see the wide range of different photographic styles but I would say it worth travelling far to see. The images are very good but I don’t know how much more you get going to the Gallery to looking to them on the web.

Eastbourne Photographic Society

We are a member of the Kent County Photographic Association (KCPA), the Sussex Federation of Photographic Societies (SxPS) and are affiliated to the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (PAGB). Meetings are held at the Eastbourne Blind Society, Longstone Road, Eastbourne, BN22 8DA, UK (map link), from September through to May of the following year.

Aims and Objectives

The aim of the society is to help those interested in photography in all its forms, to increase their knowledge and enjoyment of this absorbing and creative hobby. All members are encouraged to take part in the activities of the society which, as well as talks by well-known photographic experts, include competitions for members work and outings.

New Members

Beginners are especially welcome, no matter how limited their knowledge or equipment, and there are Tips & Techniques Forums to give guidance on the basics of taking and making good photographs. In addition to this, the ready help and advice of the more experienced members is always available; plus there is a photographic library of books and magazines.

Regular print, slide and digital projection competitions are held. These are divided into classes to give members of all standards the opportunity to compete at their own level, and to receive constructive comments on their work. Shop or trade processed prints are accepted in all classes; digital or computer prints and slides are welcome providing the original image/images are taken by photographic means.

To those of you joining EPS this year, welcome! Many of the club activities and competitions may seem a little confusing, so if you are unclear about anything, please don't hesitate to ask. EPS members aim to be friendly and approachable, so if you feel unsure about anything, find it difficult to get involved, or perhaps feel left out please let the Chairman, or any other Committee Member know. We want you to enjoy your membership, and if you aren't happy, we want to know!

U1B Opportunity for Young Photographers

Young Londoners (aged 15 - 22) can now apply to join Photo Posse, an exciting new skills development initiative run in collaboration between A New Direction and The Photographers' Gallery.

Photo Posse is a special training and work scheme for young people offering a vocational route into further training, education and employment within the arts and creative industries.

Participants will form a working group interested in developing photography skills, and will gain experience at capturing the visual essence of real events such as - talks, receptions, festivals, gigs, performances, corporate events and conferences.

The Photo Posse will receive training and mentoring from experienced professional photographers and educators, with guest talks by a range of professional photographers.

Participants will gain:

• Training in particular photography styles (documentary, event, portrait)
• The opportunity to meet and shadow professional photographers
• A chance to build your portfolio
• Support for a pathway into further training, study and employment
• The possibility to have your work published
• Practical experience in photographing a range of events
• A host of other transferable skills

U1B Lighthouse - TRAINING & MENTORING

Lighthouse offers a variety of training courses and mentoring opportunities for filmmakers and artists. Our initiatives include script development workshops and introductory courses for screenwriters; the Guiding Lights mentoring scheme for up-and-coming filmmakers; a Post Graduate Diploma in Digital Media Arts run in conjunction with the University of Brighton; and a programme of short courses in various aspects of filmmaking and digital and moving image art production aimed at both beginner and intermediate levels.

AAA Meeting With Adviser

Today I had a meeting with Marina my adviser. We general discussed my progress on the Arts Award and my ideas.

General - I should rename the posts on the blog to make it easier to all looking at it to see what posts refer to what section of the award.
Unit 1

A - The idea is for me to design and print a leaflet for a college open house event which will feature my photography work. I will work with Matt Healey (media techincian), in Adobe InDesign and than share the work by having leaflets to hand out to the public.

B - Rob feedback sould be left as a post to the blog.
- Also I should include opportunity's for the career research for example - local clubs, light house Brighton, BFI, Tate gallery.

D - This should be based on my experience and after talking about what I found difficult the possible subject might be "how hard it is for someone studying a creative course in school to get an outside visit or resources and how this changes the way you work on the subject". This could be a talk, poster, video and also should include comments from others.

Unit 2

I should answer her questions for the previous meeting, the ones from arts award and any the council might have.

- Needs to be something I would want to enter.
- Where is the competition
- Who is it open to
- How to enter do I need prints
- Needs something to enter over / what happens to the image
- Judging - perhaps a local photography club, would they want to enter
- what to do with the images

I had the idea for the winners images to be made into a calender

- Where to get them made - National company (online) or a local printer
- How to share them are there sold or free

When I am organizing the competition I would need to work backwards e.g.

When do you want them,
How long to print,
How long to Judge,
How long to get the entries together,
How long is the competition open for.
How to spread the word.

U2.1 Council Advice Response

Here's an overview of what you need to think about. Feel free to ring me in the office next week if you want to talk about any of it in more detail, or email me if you prefer.

First off, you need a theme. We try to develop one that is relevant in a wider context/where there may be media coverage about a certain topic already as this means people may be more interested and aware of your topic. So this year, our theme is loosely based around the UN Year of Biodiversity - and our theme will be 'Hidden landscapes'. Choose a theme that allows for a number of different interpretations - so we are suggesting people can take photos of natural landscapes, urban environment, people or they can go for a more abstract interpretation.

Decide what categories of entry you are going to have - we have 3: 16+. 11-15 years and under 11. The hardest group to reach are the 11-15 years and we tend to have fewer entries from them. As we are a County Council, we allow entries from anyone who is resident in East Sussex. Will you be doing the same or going national?

Launch date and closing date. Allow enough time for people to enter.

Decide on how you will publicise your event - for us, we use our website and our Council magazine, plus we send out a press release to local newspapers, we design posters (A3) and flyers (A5) and send these to libraries and schools. You will need to design a poster and write the copy to go on it - think about the image you use on your poster (if you use an image - you may go for typography only). And write your copy so it makes the theme v clear but allows for people's imaginations to explore the idea. Don't clutter your poster - we put v little copy on there and point people to our website for more info. Could you create a website for the competition and that way you can display everything on there - the theme, the copy that explains it, the rules, the entry form, competition closing date etc. Then you can display the winning pics on the website after the judging.

You will need to state what the rules are somewhere - if you can put it on a website then you have more room. If you are only working on paper, then you need to write the rules v succinctly and probably put them on the back of flyers. These need to cover things like - what format can people send pics in, how many can they send (we allow 3), can they be b&w as well as colour, where should they be resident to enter the competition, judges decision is final, if they take pics of people do they need to have a consent form signed by the person they have taken the pic of, are you going to reuse the winning photos? If so, where? By entering, does the photographer retain the copyright but grant you permission to use the image for, say, 2 years and where would you use the image? (For us this is relevant as we often use the images we receive on our website or in Council publications). But you need to make sure you take any publications out of distribution once the permission for use period has passed. Create an entry form that people have to complete - to include name, address, email, phone number, titles of photos, signature, and that they have read the rules. They can submit the form electronically and the signature can just be them typing their name.

Prizes - ring local photography shops etc to see if they'll give you vouchers that you can give away.

Who will judge the competition - ask around anyone you know + in local camera shops, colleges etc if they know of good up and coming local photographers, or try to get a big name just be contacting them and telling them honestly what you are trying to achieve. Most people remember that they had to start out somewhere too and are happy to help if they can. You shouldn't have to pay the judge.

Regarding how can people submit the photos - in the past we have asked people to send them in as prints. This year, we are going to open a Flickr account for submissions.

Prize giving and a private view - try to arrange an exhibition of the winning photos either at a gallery or public space. Perhaps make the opening night a private view for the winners and their family and friends, and invite some press, heads of art or photography from local colleges etc.

Today I phoned the Local council to speak to the person you organize the their summer photography competition and I explained my Ideas and she is going to email some ideas to me and I can get back to her with any more problems, once I have this I can get the idea finalized and an action plan together.

U1A Gallery Ideas

Today I visited both the National portrait gallery (Irving Penn) and the Photographers Gallery (Deutsch Borse Photography prize 2010.

Both galleys where very good and the images were amazing and I hope to do a full write up for section 1c by the end of April.

I have allays said that I wanted to create and learn about a new art form which could go along alongside my photography After visiting the two galleys I have decided on Graphic Design and to create a leaflet to go with my work and perhaps it could be for exhibition at college later in the year where I hope some of my AS photography will be shown. I am going to up load the leaflets I have and the possible software I know is used for the type of work In-design.

U1B Ravensbourne

On Arrival we was briefed on what was going to happen. We was than split into 4 groups to cover all areas of production. Then we would make a TV news show, after we would all watch it back. After this there would be a question and answer session from the course leader about was was on offer and how to apply.

I was in the studio group and assign the role of vision mixer (live editing). The idea of the day was to give an insight into a day of a Ravensbourne student.

However due to equipment failing, news items could not be filmed until later in the day. When it came to the live news show there was no pre recorded features and the interview had to go first so it was filmed back to front with no audio for example headline audio.

Due to delays in the production this took all day and there was no de-brief or anything about the courses. But it was said if you wanted to get on a similar course you would need to be extra media actives outside of college.

For the arts award this was not a brilliant view in career and training but did give an insight onto the tv production course.

Guest Speaker at Local Movie Club

A few months ago I was approached by a member of the Eastbourne Movie-Makers, to addend one of their meeting as a guest speaker about my film "What Happens When You Call 999?". The member contacted me after reading an article in the local newspaper, about the film being screened during the Co-operative Young Filmmakers Festival at the National Media Museum in Bradford.

So I went to one of their meeting on Wednesday 3rd March 2010. At the meeting the member introduced me, than I introduced the film which was watched by all the members. After the film I talked about how the film came about (the silver arts award and what that was), how I got the access I did and how long it took and the produce of ok'ing the film with the Fire Service. I than answered questions from them about how I made and edited the film for example the use of shots, sound and editing techniques e.g. the split screen and the effect of this. They also asked me what was happen to the film now and what I am doing. I than join the group for that evening's topic which was the members asking question to a member with experience for help in film making, I helped to answer the questions!

U1B The digital work flow process using Lightroom

The digital work flow process using Lightroom

1) Library
This included the import process, file hander ling(how and where to save images), how to set up metadata and key words and how to use them affectively. The selection process using flags, starts and colours and when a quick develop might be useful e.g. white balance and expose.

2) Develop
In develop Rob explained to me the editing process or developing. Histogram (blacks, full light, expose), Treatment to images white balance, toner, toner curve. How to add detail in a shot e.g. sharpening and noise.

3) Slide show
In this stage Rob taught what guides do, using the identity plate, titles, how to add and background along with audio and when a slide show might be useful and final the exporting stage,
4) Print
Rob explains how to print and what stage to print using tool such as margins, page setup and the identity plate.
